Kapila - A Wilderness Retreat |
|
|
Welcome to Kapila - an idyllic wilderness retreat on the banks of the river Kabini. Situated at the cusp of Nagarahole and Bandipur Tiger reserves this area, generally referred to as the Kabini region, is one of the most sought after wilderness destinations in southern India. Apart from being recognized as one of the finest pieces of tiger and elephant turf, the area is also a haven to avifauna, with over 250 species of birds recorded.
The forests of Nagarahole and Bandipur are spread over 1500 sq km (580 sq miles) and are a mix of tropical moist deciduous and dry deciduous types. The two parks are separated by the Kabini River, across which an irrigation dam was built in the early 80's. These backwaters of the Kabini reservoir is now an important perennial water source where one can witness one of the largest and most spectacular congregations of Asiatic elephants (Elephas maximus) in the dry summer months. Monsoon is during early June and mid September, with rainfall ranging from 1000 - 1500 mm (40-60 inches) in the Kabini region.

In addition to boat and Jeep safaris to view the animals in their natural habitat, you will also enjoy short rides on elephant back (kids will love it!!). It's a great opportunity to learn about the complex eco system and nature's unique mosaic. Watching animals, birds, myriad species insects, plants and trees real close helps you understand the important role each play in nature. Our guides will be happy to explain some of these intricate details or to answer some the questions that you may have on the park.
The backwaters of the Kabini also provide a great opportunity for water sport like sailing, wind surfing, canoeing etc. we encourage you to bring you own equipment and enjoy. There are fish in the lake but they are hard to catch or angle since most of the villagers fish using large nets. Nature walks, treks to the neighboring village sites and temples can also be organized on request.
